Agreed, re-marketing sucks.

Posted on Updated on

Valuable Content Ltd. posted this awesome presentation on why re-marketing sucks. You know how you google something today, and tomorrow ads for it appear on every site you visit? That’s called re-marketing. In theory, it should help advertisers post things you’d actually be interested in, right? But no… imagine google searching “Twerk Bears” for a gag gift (No, I am not even joking! This is a real thing >> Walmart and twerking bears [Facebook Video]) — and the next day… twerking related items are all over the ads — EVERYWHERE YOU GO!!!

Could get embarrassing fast. This presentation was definitely worth a re-blog, besides… who doesn’t love Dr. Seuss?!

omG, too funny. I know someone who said retargeting was a huge help to her site, but this was about a decade ago.

It’s a brilliant idea, but I think that now that it’s such a frequently used tactic by so many businesses, it’s starting to lose some of it’s effectiveness. It seems to still work kind of. But with so many doing it, its starting to seem like more marketing noise. The rise of ad blockers seems to indicate marketers need to start coming up with other creative ways to reach people as well.

Yeah, I’d guess for this decade and folks trying to accelerate, the golden window of opportunity’s gone. Her site today has 125,000 RSS subscribers, 17,500 email subscribers and 12,000+ comments a year, and she really says retargeting was a major factor in that success. To replicate that today, well, I’m unsure how easy that would be

        Probably not easy at all!
